Today is the last day to register to vote in California
I hope that everyone in California takes the time to ensure that their vote counts next week. There is a lot at stake in the next election; preventing Romney from being elected, labeling GMO’s on our foods, reforming 3 strikes policies, repealing the death penalty in California, and more. More, like the lifting spirit of the country, as Cornel West puts it. I registered as Peace and Freedom party when I was eighteen and changed to Democrat most likely when I voted for Bill Clinton’s firs term when I realized if you want to change anything, you have to work within the system. A system of ideals is great in your own personal life, but I think when it comes to moving big infrastructures, it is best to chip away from the inside. I do respect a lot of the independent party candidates demanding a voice in this campaign.
This interview with activist, author, and professor Cornel West is brilliant. I consider him the MLK of our times. I love that he says that we, as a people, still need to put pressure on even Obama to be held accountable. We can’t just vote, and leave everything up to one human being with multiple challenges ahead of him. We still need to protect our rights and voting is one essential step of that process.
Be sure to vote, register, and update your address.
