Kenneth Anger Living Legend
I was downtown when I got the call to see Anger’s films at the SFMoMa on Thursday night from my artist friend Jonathan Casella. At first, I was a little hesitant, as I had seen a lot of his films before, but so glad that I went as to my TOTAL surprise, he came out on stage to introduce the films in this amazing red sweater, which I deciphered said “ANGER” in relief knit, so cool. It was a rare encounter and thrill to hear him after speak about how he edited the Jesus footage into Scorpio Rising: “I was in the middle of editing, and I received this package in the mail. I thought it was a film can returned to me from a film festival, but it was actually a mistake that was supposed to be sent to the Church a few blocks over with the same address. I took it as a sign from God, and edited it in, kind of satirizing people who follow false allegiances.” Righteous! I’m psyched for the Maya Deren screening here. She is my ultimate film hero.
Thanks to SFMoMa for bringing Anger out and to Orion for hooking it up. Still from Scorpio Rising above.
